Em dashes have become the newest in a long line of issues facing authors. It can link them to the dreaded AI invasion of our creative world.
Formatting, as well as language, do develop and change over time moves on. A simple example is the fact we no longer double space after a period. Em dashes are in vogue. Physical editors suggest them more frequently. And I have even begun using them. They have worked into the tools of the trade. Such as spell and grammar checks.
These concerns are legitimate. Not only for authors struggling to build a following and get representation, but for the publishers, editors, and agents who may use AI to screen potential authors. AI is helpful as a tool, yet never a creative or professional substitution. Whether internal AI or external, the issue is the same. The professionals in our industry must be accountable, in the same way authors have been, for the tools of their trade not becoming the problem.
We cannot count of our fans to take the time to ask. Potential agents, editors and publishers sure won't. They are swamped with queries. I know I'm going to consider retiring the em dash for now. What about you?
